Understanding Morris County Releases
A person is released from Morris County custody when the Sheriff records the end of that jail episode. The reason matters. A court may order pretrial release, dismiss a case, award time served, or impose probation. A person may also finish a county term. By contrast, movement to New Jersey Department of Corrections custody, another county, federal custody, a hospital, or ICE is a transfer. The Morris County jail record ends in each case, but only some exits return the person to the community.
Morris County released inmates are tracked by the agency that controlled the next stage. The Morris County Correctional Facility keeps its booking and discharge records. The court file explains the legal order. NJDOC records a state commitment and later prison discharge. The State Parole Board documents parole supervision. Federal agencies maintain separate systems. A missing name on a current jail page proves none of these outcomes by itself.
- Discharge
- The recorded end of a custody term or supervision term.
- Time served
- A sentence satisfied by time already spent in custody.
- Parole
- Conditional release from a prison term under State Parole Board supervision.
- Probation
- A court-ordered community sentence supervised through the Judiciary, not a prison release.
Morris County Release Paths
Release language can hide a major difference in legal status. Morris County uses a risk- and conditions-based pretrial system, while sentenced cases can end through completion, credits, parole, or a transfer. Read the maintained disposition field with the court order or receiving-agency record. Do not translate every departure into “bonded out,” and do not treat parole as the end of all legal control.
| Exit type | Meaning | Best next record |
|---|---|---|
| Pretrial release | A court permits community release subject to stated conditions. | Court order and Sheriff discharge entry |
| Time served or sentence complete | The county custodial term is satisfied. | Sheriff date and time out plus judgment |
| Probation | The court imposes community supervision. | Judiciary case and Morris adult probation |
| Parole | A state prisoner leaves an institution under NJSPB control. | NJDOC custody history and State Parole Board |
| Transfer | Another jail, NJDOC, USMS, ICE, or another authority takes custody. | Receiving agency and transfer record |
| Dismissal | The charge or case ends as ordered, subject to any other hold. | Court disposition and Sheriff discharge entry |
Leaving the Morris County roster is not proof of freedom. A transfer ends local custody while another authority continues it.
Was a Morris Inmate Bonded Out?
“Bonded out” is often the wrong short answer in Morris County. Since January 1, 2017, New Jersey’s pretrial process has been based chiefly on risk and release conditions instead of routine cash bail. Unless the prosecutor seeks detention, the first appearance and release decision ordinarily occurs within 48 hours. A narrow 2026 firearm-analysis rule can allow only the additional time reasonably needed, up to seven days.
Check the New Jersey Courts criminal justice reform material and the actual case order. The order may state monitoring or other conditions, but it does not establish the exact moment the jail completed discharge. Pair it with the Morris County release record. If another hold exists, the court’s release decision in one case may not result in community release.
Morris County Release Record Fields
A useful request identifies the person, the exact custody episode, and the authority for the exit. Morris County does not publish a public data dictionary, so avoid assuming a local code means what a similar code means elsewhere. Ask for the maintained release or disposition field and its existing code legend. The best proof combines the jail’s actual date and time out with the order, sentence, or agency action that explains it.
| Field | What it establishes |
|---|---|
| Booked name and aliases | Identity used for the custody episode |
| Date of birth or age | A way to separate similar names, subject to lawful redaction |
| Booking or SBI number | The county or state identifier tied to the record |
| Admission date and time | When the recorded custody episode began |
| Release date and time | When physical custody ended in that system |
| Release or disposition code | The maintained reason for exit |
| Releasing authority | The court or agency that authorized the action |
| Receiving agency | Whether the exit was a transfer rather than community release |
The official Morris County jail page identifies Records as the record contact but does not expose a historical name search. The page image below shows that official contact route and the absence of a county recent-release feed.
That contact is the starting point for the exact physical release event, while the court or receiving agency supplies the legal context.
Request Morris County Release Records
Sheriff and Bureau of Corrections records follow the Sheriff’s own Open Public Records Act route, not the county’s general GovQA form. A request should name existing records rather than ask staff to research what happened. Include enough detail to locate one custody episode and ask for electronic delivery. No fixed Morris Sheriff fee is published for a discharge record or booking photo, so request an estimate before any special-service charge is incurred.
- Gather the full booked name, known aliases, date of birth if known, booking or SBI number, and a narrow admission or release range.
- Open the Morris County Sheriff OPRA form or use the Sheriff’s printable form.
- Request the existing booking record, release or discharge record, date and time out, maintained reason code, transfer destination if applicable, and the code legend.
- Ask for electronic copies and state whether certification is required. Seek a fee estimate before approving a special charge.
- If access is redacted or denied, read the cited basis and use the Government Records Council guidance where appropriate.

A precise request is easier to process and less likely to require clarification than a broad request for all information about a person.
Morris Release Record Law
New Jersey’s Open Public Records Act, N.J.S.A. 47:1A-1 through -13, covers records made or kept in official business, including electronic data and photographs, subject to exclusions and other law. A custodian can redact protected fields. Juvenile, victim, medical, security-sensitive, sealed, expunged, and protected criminal-investigatory material may be withheld. Court records instead follow Judiciary rules, including Court Rule 1:38.
Retention and public web display are different. County schedule C280000-002 sets a three-year minimum for the electronic Daily Population, Commitment, and Discharge Report series. Photo cards have a ten-year minimum after disposition or release, while the records copy of a county admission form has a two-year minimum after discharge or sentence completion. These schedules authorize record management. They do not promise disclosure of every field or an online archive.
An expungement under New Jersey’s court process can isolate eligible arrest, commitment, fingerprint, photograph, and docket material from ordinary public access. Respect a lawful absence. Do not use an old link to reconstruct a record that is no longer public.
Note: Current OPRA response rules should be checked on the form when filing because statutory procedures have changed since older seven-day summaries were published.
Morris Release Property Procedures
The adult Morris County Correctional Facility publishes rules for sending property out while a person remains in custody. An incarcerated person may pay to send accumulated property or arrange pickup by a friend or relative on a scheduled visiting day. The county does not publish an adult gate-release hour, exit door, family waiting area, ride service, or final-property procedure. Do not turn the in-custody rule into a promise about release-day handling.
The juvenile process is different and confidential. The July 2024 resident handbook says a youth receives and signs for property at discharge, leaves through the gated rear, and may be released only by court order to an approved adult. Those details apply only to the Morris County Juvenile Detention Center. Adult and juvenile release procedures must never be merged.
Find Morris County Released Inmates
Start with the custody type, not a single all-purpose search. Morris County has no public historical jail roster or official release feed. A current-custody page, when available through an agency or VINE, can help while someone is held, but a released person may disappear. Search the county record, state record, court file, or federal locator that matches the actual legal path.
- Call Morris County Correctional Facility Records at 973-631-5174 for present physical custody and booking or release record routing.
- Request the Sheriff discharge entry for a county jail episode. Ask whether the exit was community release or transfer.
- Search NJDOC by name and, when known, SBI number if a state sentence or transfer is possible.
- Check the Judiciary case for a release order, disposition, sentence, dismissal, probation term, or judgment.
- Use New Jersey VINE for custody events, BOP for a federal sentence, ICE ODLS for supported immigration custody, or a federal docket and USMS for federal pretrial movement.
A person missing from a live custody system may be released, transferred, beyond that system’s scope, or removed under a lawful retention rule.
For the same-day procedural route, the Morris County 24-Hour Releases page explains how to request a discharge interval without implying that a live county list exists.
Morris NJDOC Release Search
The NJDOC Offender Search applies to people sentenced into the state system, not every short Morris County jail stay. Search by full name and identifying details. An SBI number is the strongest identifier when available. Read the incarceration history for Date In-Custody and Date Out-of-Custody, then review state sentence details for the County of Commitment and current calculated dates.
| NJDOC field | Correct reading |
|---|---|
| SBI number | State identifier used to distinguish records |
| County of Commitment | County tied to the sentence, not necessarily the prison location |
| Date Out-of-Custody | Historical end of a listed NJDOC custody period |
| Current Max Release Date | A recalculated maximum date, not proof of release |
| Current Parole Eligibility Date | An eligibility calculation, not a physical exit |
| Mandatory minimum | A sentence restriction affecting eligibility |
The official form appears below as captured from the NJDOC search entry after its disclaimer.
The name and SBI controls show why a state record should be matched by more than a common name. NJDOC generally removes a completed custodial record one year after the maximum or mandatory parole supervision term expires, with stated exceptions for CSL and PSL entries.
Morris County Recent Releases
No official Morris County 24-hour or 72-hour public release feed was located. The Sheriff site does not publish a browser-based recent-release archive, window, fields, cadence, or photo feed. The “Morris County Sheriff, NJ” mobile app announcement names an Inmate Information feature, but it does not document a released tab, historical window, photo archive, or update schedule. Treat the app as a possible current portal, not proof of a release list.
For an exact interval, request the existing Daily Data Processing Report, Discharge Report, or equivalent report with Eastern Time beginning and ending timestamps. Ask for maintained name, booking number, admission and discharge time, reason code, and transfer destination, subject to lawful redaction. The three-year electronic retention minimum does not mean the public has a three-year online window.
Morris Release Court Records
A court record can remain useful after a custody listing disappears. PROMIS/Gavel covers indictable Superior Court matters within public-access limits. Look for detention or pretrial release orders, a plea or dismissal, judgment, sentence, jail credit, probation, and later orders. Municipal disorderly-persons cases follow municipal court channels. A court order explains legal authority but usually does not give the precise jail-processing time.
The Judiciary electronic access page documents public fields and PROMIS/Gavel scope. The captured page below shows the official court route for matching the custody exit to the case.
For a copy, provide the vicinage, division, docket or indictment number, party, approximate year, and exact order requested. Morris Criminal Records can route public Superior Court file requests.
Morris Release Reentry Support
The Morris County Reentry Program begins individual planning before release. It can coordinate a transition plan and appointments, then continue purpose-neutral case management after a person leaves. County materials identify help involving health care, benefits, treatment, identification, and legal navigation. Coordinator Antonella McGee is listed at 973-631-5036 and amcgee@co.morris.nj.us.
This local layer does not verify a release record. It supports the transition around an anticipated or completed release. The custodial agency still confirms the date and type of exit, and the court or supervision agency controls its own orders and conditions.
Getting Home After Morris Release
Morris County does not publish a correctional release ride, jail-door transit stop, or pickup guarantee. The county’s official bus information lists NJ Transit routes 871, 872, 873, 874, and 875 as serving Morristown. It also lists 973-275-5555 for NJ Transit information. Those facts support trip planning, not a claim that any route stops at the jail.
Use the live NJ Transit planner from 43 John Street and confirm the actual release time before arranging travel. Court processing, property steps, a late record entry, or transfer can change the plan. A family pickup should not be scheduled from an estimated release date alone.
Morris Post-Release Supervision
Parole and probation are not interchangeable. NJSPB supervises parole after a state prison release. The Morris/Sussex Vicinage handles probation imposed by a court. A person can be out of a facility and still subject to reporting, movement, treatment, or other lawful conditions. Supervision ends only through the appropriate discharge, not because the person is absent from a jail roster.
Verify a parole release through NJDOC’s Date Out-of-Custody, then use the State Parole Board public-information channel for lawful status questions. For probation, begin with the court case and Morris adult probation routing. The detailed Morris County Post-Release Supervision page separates the offices, hearing records, absconder route, and end-of-supervision evidence.
Morris Release Alerts and Locators
New Jersey VINE can search participating custody records and register notices for events such as release or transfer. Current guidance says VINE supplies information on offenders in custody, so it is best used before release and as an alert, not as a permanent former-inmate archive. Preserve event details, then confirm the official discharge with Morris Records or NJDOC. A transfer alert does not mean community release.
The BOP Inmate Locator applies to federal sentences and generally covers federal inmates released after 1982. A past release date or RELEASED location can show the person left BOP custody; IN TRANSIT does not. Federal pretrial movement belongs with the federal docket and U.S. Marshals. These federal systems do not replace a Morris County discharge record.
Morris Release and ICE Transfer
A Morris County exit followed by ICE custody is a transfer, not community release. ICE’s Online Detainee Locator System is relevant only when the facts support immigration custody. Search by A-number and country of birth, or by exact biographical information. ICE states that ODLS can include people released from ICE custody during the prior 60 days. That federal window is separate from the nonexistent Morris 24- or 72-hour feed.
ODLS has limits for age, brief custody, data timing, identity, safety, and security. A no-result does not prove release or removal. When a Morris record names ICE as the receiving agency, treat the county discharge and later ICE release as two distinct events and verify each with the agency that recorded it.
Morris Regional Release Authority
The Morris County Correctional Facility is a regional hub. A 2024 county announcement says a Somerset shared-custody agreement runs through May 2029 and reported Somerset and Sussex detainees held in Morristown. That arrangement can split three facts: the physical custodian, the committing county, and the authority that controls release. “Not in Morris” can mean return or transfer to the originating jurisdiction.
For a Somerset or Sussex case housed at Morris, match the Morris physical exit record to the originating court and agency record. The Morris jail can document when the person left its custody. Another county may control the case, transport, or final community release. This is why a facility name alone is not a full release result.
Morris Release Search Comparison
Choose the source based on custody type and the question being asked. No single portal covers all Morris County released inmates.
| Situation | Correct source | Strongest release evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Morris-only jail stay | Facility Records, Sheriff OPRA, court, VINE | County date and time out plus disposition |
| NJ state sentence | NJDOC and NJSPB | Date Out-of-Custody plus supervision context |
| Federal sentence | BOP Locator and federal docket | Past release date or RELEASED, corroborated as needed |
| ICE custody | ICE ODLS and ERO | Released-from-ICE result within scope or direct confirmation |
| Federal pretrial custody | Federal docket and USMS | Court order plus operational confirmation |
Why is a released person missing? The live list may cover custody only, the agency may differ, data may lag, an expungement may restrict access, or a web-retention period may have ended. Absence requires another official check.
Morris County Release Systems
The Facility Map includes the physical county jail and the state, court, and federal systems that can control what happens after a Morris County custody episode. Each route has its own release evidence.
- Morris County Correctional Facility: county booking, discharge, and transfer records.
- New Jersey Department of Corrections: statewide prison histories and out-of-custody dates.
- New Jersey State Parole Board: parole release and continuing supervision.
- Morris/Sussex Vicinage: release orders, dispositions, sentences, and probation.
- Federal Bureau of Prisons: federal sentence locations and release dates.
- ICE Detention and ODLS: current and limited recent ICE custody information.
- U.S. Marshals Service: federal pretrial custody and transport context.
Start with the system that held the person at the moment in question. Then use the court or agency record that explains why custody changed.
